Here’s what I try to do with my writing.
Bring creativity to politics and policymaking, since there isn’t much creativity in either one.
Set up conversations with interesting people—former Members of Congress to Missouri’s most famous teachers/pornographers and everyone in between.
Analyze some of our most intractable problems, and find real (and plausible) solutions.
Call out hypocrisy on both sides of the aisle. (Mostly Republicans, but sometimes Democrats too.)
Fight through the political panic and help us recognize the real vs. sensationalized issues.
Write way too much in the footnotes when I realize that my articles are running too long, and get way too into the weeds of government data.
I hope you find these topics as interesting as I do!

A lot of us perpetually wonder some version of this question: “How much are things really worse today?”
Through conversations with former member of Congress—Democrats and Republicans—we try to answer that question. And on the way, we try to get stories about life in Congress, life after Congress, and any particularly fun or funny memories.
Here’s more about me.
In my Substack capacity: I’m a writer and failed politician. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and try—with middling success at best—to bring creativity to policymaking and politics, since it’s desperately needed.
I also write about history, comedy, the internet, and more.
